Jean looked up at Ymir, letting out a breath as well. “No, it’s fine, guess I just… over-reacted.” He bit his lip, kicking his feet off the ground slightly as he walked. “Sorry. That, and for the things before.” This was all becoming awkwardly sentimental. He guessed Ymir had as much practice with this kind of talk as he did.
His face did, in fact, break out into a wide grin as his he watched his plan become successful right in front of his own eyes. He bit back a laugh when the curse was hurled towards him.
But he was wrong when he thought that the cursing would be the end of it. He walked forward, wondering if the teen was actually hurt, and ended up being caught by Ymir’s leg, again. This time it came by complete surprise, leaving him without enough time to stable himself as he did before. He quickly found himself catching the pavement with his knees, ending up right beside Ymir on the ground. He could feel the disapproving stares of passerby at his back.
He brushed the feeling off, picking himself up with a whimper. “Let’s say we both deserved that.” He turned to the injured girl. “Want help?”
Ymir stretched in an over-dramatized way, before letting out a long yawn. “Sheesh, all of this apologizing and shit and soon we’re going to be holding hands and crying together about our feelings.” She gave a smile at the end, even if he couldn’t see it, to show how thankful she was the atmosphere had yet again lifted. Even if it had become a bit edgy.
On the ground, she slapped his hand away quickly. “Don’t laugh at me, Jack Ass!” She cradled her ankle tenderly, and continued to burn him with her eyes. “Damn, I hope you scraped your knee or landed flat on your ass!”
Moving back, she lent against the fence behind them, and pushed herself up until the fence was supporting all of her weight. Her ankle throbbed, but she wasn’t about to let the boy play doctor again, mostly because she could already see the annoying smirk he would wear, if she had to ask for help. “Let’s go, before weirdos come out.” She kept one hand on the fence for balance, before giving him a fake apologetic smile. “Sorry, the other weirdos.”
“All good,” Reiner replied vaguely, and grinned at the woman. She was snarky enough to be entertaining and but not offensively so, and Reiner was beginning to take a liking to her. “God, that’s disgusting, by the way. Black coffee? You’re serious?” he hissed through his teeth in mock horror and made to go order.
“Funny,” he added, stopping in his tracks and looking at her, side-on, “I didn’t think I looked quite like someone who’s interested in women,” and it wasn’t quite a lie. Reiner had been thinking on his own sexuality for sometime now and, seriously, male butts were better than female butts. And… that’s the only way he could putt it without wanting to cringe.
“To be honest,” he quickly said just before he left, “you don’t seem like someone who’s interested in men, either. But, you know, it could just be me.” He smirked antagonizingly and turned to the bar to order both of their coffees.
Ymir huffed. “Sorry, would you like me to get something similar to yours?” She sized him up, and prayed her years of being a cashier would pay off. “You look all big and tough, but I’m guessing you’re more of a sweet tooth kind of guy, like a cappuccino with many unnecessary shots of caramel or something.” She shook her head, with a click of her tongue. “Nah, bitter coffee for a bitter person.”
As stalked away, Ymir felt her face heat up slightly, but pushed away the embarrassment and rose an eyebrow. Not many people called her out on her shit, and she was amused this man had done so.
“Oh, really?” She wasn’t sure if he heard her or not, but she raised her voice so it would reach the counter. “And here I thought you felt the sparks too!” She snapped her fingers, in an over emphasized way that a cartoon character might do. “Damn, friend-zoned on the first date.” She hoped he caught her sarcastic droll that earned her a few strange looks from other customers.
